1-800 RID-OF-IT coordinates Freon disposal for refrigerators and freezers that must be dismantled to leave a property. We also remove air conditioners and collect used antifreeze and engine coolant across Toronto. Our team completes all lifting and removal work by hand.
Most appliances do not need Freon removal at all. The sections below explain when it is required and how the process works.

When is Freon removal required?
Freon removal is only required when a refrigerator or freezer must be cut apart because of doorway, stairwell or access limitations. Basement refrigerators are the most common example.
When the appliance can be safely moved to the curb intact, the Freon should stay inside. Municipal collection services handle the refrigerant processing. In that case, book a standard fridge removal appointment instead.
How the Freon removal process works
Freon removal takes two separate appointments handled by different teams. They are typically scheduled on the same day.
- Appointment one: a certified gas technician drains the refrigerant from the appliance.
- Appointment two: the 1-800 RID-OF-IT team dismantles the appliance and removes it by hand.
Our team never cuts or dismantles a refrigerator or freezer until the technician has drained it. Scheduling depends on technician availability, so book as early as possible.
What happens to the Freon?
The technician drains the Freon and discards it in compliance with environmental regulations. It is not recycled or reused. This also applies to older units with CFC refrigerants. CFC removal follows the same draining process.
Who can remove Freon?
Only certified professionals may remove Freon, following applicable safety and environmental regulations. In Ontario, people who handle refrigerants need an Ozone Depletion Prevention certificate from the Province. See Ontario’s certificate to handle refrigerants page. Never cut refrigerant lines or dismantle a charged appliance yourself.
Commercial air conditioner removal and AC unit disposal
Our team removes air conditioners from residential and commercial properties, including:
- Window and portable air conditioners
- Wall mounted and through the wall units
- Ductless mini split indoor and outdoor units
- Commercial rooftop and wall mounted systems, assessed on site
We remove AC units intact. A qualified professional must disconnect any installed unit before your AC removal appointment, because our team does not handle electrical disconnections. If a unit must be dismantled to get out, the same two appointment process applies.
Late summer and early fall bring a rise in AC removal requests as residents and businesses replace old units. Book your appointment early in the season.
Large scale AC and appliance removal for contractors and property managers
HVAC contractors and building managers often collect old condensers, air handlers and appliances during upgrades and tenant turnovers. We handle high volume ac waste services and appliance removal from job sites, storage rooms and loading docks. Larger loads are priced by volume, which lowers the cost per unit. See our contractor junk removal and property management junk removal services.
Antifreeze and engine coolant disposal
Used antifreeze is toxic to people, pets and wildlife. Never pour it on the ground or down a drain. We offer antifreeze collection and coolant disposal for:
- Residential garages with old containers
- Auto shops and fleet operators
- Property managers clearing maintenance rooms
Tell us the type and quantity when you book. Eligibility depends on volume and container condition, which we confirm before your appointment.
